This offering is for a replica of a Confederate States of America (CSA)
Artillery Sword
and
scabbard
. It is similar to the swords produced by the
Richmond Arsenal
during the War.
The Richmond Arsenal was a primary producer of swords and firearms for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Much of the machinery in the arsenal was obtained when the Confederacy captured the Union held town of Harper’s Ferry and transferred arms making equipment found there to Richmond. The Richmond Arsenal operated throughout the Civil War and most of the facility was destroyed during the Evacuation Fire of 1865
Weapons used by the Confederacy tended to be heavier and more cumbersome than their Northern counterparts – in part due to often using materials at hand (i.e., a plow tine) to craft weapons and, in part, due to preference of procurement officers. The artillery sword produced by Richmond Arsenal was no exception and is a good example of a heavy duty sword. Patterned after Roman swords, they were mainstay weapons for field artillery soldiers over the course of the war..
The reproduction offered here has carefully followed the original swords; there is a broad, double edge blade with fuller (blood grooves). The handle is heavy brass and the cross guard has the letters “CS” stamped in the center with a single star sitting on the pommel. A leather covered, brass accented scabbard provides safe housing for the weapon.
