Description
Japanese Dragonware Plate Gray w/White Moriage Dragon 4" Souvenir JapanThis plate features an encrusted stylized dragon curling around the charcoal grayed edge of this souvenir plate. Beautiful detailed moriage textured surface and detail. Metallic glaze is used as a highlight. The base of the plate are some grey and bluish swirls. The backside has a few pre-made holes for threading a string or wire for hanging. Stamped "Made in Japan". Popular souvenir found in the 1930's - 1940's.

Dragonware
Although it began to be made in the late 19th century, Dragonware is still made today. The raised, three-dimensional parts of the moriage and Dragonware pieces were often added to the pottery using a technique known as slipwork. Each tendril and scale is raised, not with gilt but often in white or black.
Moriage
The use of moriage is widespread throughout the range of Japanes and Chinese pottery that has been available over the last 200 years. Moriage is the term used to describe the layering of small beads or lines of slip clay onto the surface of the pottery, vase or bowl which is then glazed over to leave a relief that can be felt and seen.
